3 Tips for Preparing for Your Colonoscopy

Author: Ahsan Bhatti, MD

One of the most difficult parts about getting a colonoscopy is the required prep work. Before your procedure, it’s important to clear the contents of your colon. Doing so will allow your surgeon to spot any existing polyps, and will reduce the risk of complications. With that in mind, in this article we are going to offer a few tips and suggestions for preparing for your colonoscopy.

Follow Your Surgeon’s Instructions

The most important piece of advice we can give you is to follow your surgeon’s pre-op instructions. This is a good rule of thumb for any surgical procedure. Surgical preparation is different for each patient and your surgeon will know your situation best, so listen to their instructions and follow them.

Set Aside Time to Prepare

Preparing for your colonoscopy can take one or two days – depending on your specific situation. Make sure to set aside time to prepare in the privacy of your home. If you have children to take care of, ask a family member or friend to help take care of them during your prep.

Get a Variety of Clear Liquids

The day before your procedure you will likely be restricted to drinking clear liquids. Drinking water can get boring, so stock your kitchen with a variety of clear liquids. Here is a quick list of clear liquids that are OK to consume during your prep: Gatorade, carbonated beverages, coffee (no cream), tea, flavored gelatin, ices without milk, popsicles, fruit juices and drinks without pulp, bouillon, broth, honey, sugar, plain hard candy, salt and pepper. Stay away from red/purple liquids, as well as milk products.
