Normally, the body's immune system is designed to protect it from foreign invaders. However, when people with celiac disease eat foods containing gluten, their immune system forms antibodies to gluten which then attack the intestinal lining. This causes inflammation in the intestines and damages its ability to absorb nutrients from food.
Symptoms include gas and bloating, weight loss, and fatigue.
How is Celiac Disease Diagnosed?
Dr. Bhatti may use several different tests to confirm a diagnosis, including:
- blood tests
- screenings
- intestinal biopsy
Minnesota Celiac Doctor
The only treatment for celiac disease is a gluten-free diet (not eating foods that contain wheat, rye, and barley).
Recognizing celiac disease can be difficult, because some of its symptoms are similar to those of other diseases. Dr. Bhatti can determine whether your symptoms are due to celiac disease or another digestive condition and provide the most effective treatment. We have clinics located in Edina and Chaska but treat patients throughout the Twin Cities.
